Greg Holland News

Greg Holland (elbow) struck out two batters in a scoreless inning Monday against the Cubs. Holland was very shaky in his last outing, so this was nice to see. According to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, his fastball sat in the 92-94.5 mph range in this one. It wasn’t too long ago that the assumption was that Adam Ottavino would open the season as the closer by default, but that’s no longer a sure thing. In fact, Holland could have the job in short order.

Greg Holland (elbow) needed just 10 pitches to get through a 1-2-3 ninth inning Wednesday in his Cactus League debut. Holland hit 95 mph with his fastball against the first batter he faced and also broke off a couple nice off-speed pitches. He is expected to make another six to eight appearances in the Cactus League before the start of the 2017 regular season. If everything goes smoothly, the right-hander will likely open as the Rockies' new closer. That would mean a setup role for Adam Ottavino.

Greg Holland (elbow) will make his Cactus League debut on Wednesday. The Rockies have been easing Holland into things this spring after he missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery. Colorado hasn't ruled out using the veteran reliever in their closer role from the outset even though his velocity is sitting in the low-90s and he'll have less than three weeks of game action to tune up before Opening Day. We're betting on Adam Ottavino opening the year as the Rockies' closer, with Holland pushing for the job eventually if he regains his pre-surgery form.

Greg Holland (elbow) made a successful simulated appearance Monday in Rockies camp. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post says Holland was sitting 91-92 mph with his fastball and broke off a few nice-looking breaking balls. That's better velocity than what was reported at some of his showcases this winter. Holland signed a one-year, $7 million free agent contract with the Rockies in late January after missing the entire 2016 season following Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. He'll likely open the 2017 campaign as a setup man to Adam Ottavino.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, Greg Holland will be guaranteed $7 million in his one-year deal with the Rockies. The deal includes non-closing incentives which could push the total to $10 million. It also has incentives for closing which could max out at $14 million. This reflects the uncertainty involved as Holland makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. Adam Ottavino still might be the favorite for saves to begin the year.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that "things appear to be heating up" with the market for Greg Holland. Heyman says that the final three clubs involved in the bidding for Holland may be the Rockies, Nationals and a "mystery team." The former closer is reportedly seeking a two-year contract with an opt-out clause after the first year of the deal. Holland is coming back from Tommy John surgery and was throwing just 88-91 mph during a showcase in November, but he'll probably wind up being a bargain if he regains his arm strength.

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich acknowledged Wednesday that the club has checked in on free agent reliever Greg Holland. BSN Denver reported on Tuesday that the Rockies approached Holland about a multi-year deal, but Bridich refused to go into any specifics on the matter. "Nothing to comment on there," said Bridich. "We have checked in, like most teams, I imagine." Holland missed the entire 2016 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and was clocked in the 88-91 mph range when he threw for teams during a showcase in November, but the thought is that he'll be closer to his old self as he regains arm strength. Previous reports indicated that he was looking for a two-year deal in the range of $22 million. The Nationals still look like a natural fit for Holland, but they could look in-house or on the trade market to fill the closer role. As for the Rockies, Adam Ottavino currently projects to serve as closer in 2017.
