Sam Wolff    R  Giants

Giants acquired RHP Sam Wolff and RHP Israel Cruz from the Rangers for LHP Matt Moore and international bonus pool money. Wolff is the better bet of the players going to the Giants. The 26-year-old was a sixth round pick in the 2013 draft and blossomed into a power reliever during his ascent up the minor league ladder. He split the 2017 season between Double-A and Triple-A, compiling a combined 2.93 ERA with 59 strikeouts and 19 walks in 43 innings. He is likely to see time in the Giants bullpen in 2018 and with that strikeout rate could work his way into late-inning duty eventually.

Matt Moore    S  Rangers

Rangers acquired LHP Matt Moore and international signing bonus pool money from the Giants for minor league RHPs Sam Wolff and Israel Cruz. The Giants wanted to unload Moore's $9 million 2018 salary to free up "resources to address our position player needs" according to general manager Bobby Evans. Moore was an elite prospect before flourishing in his first four major league seasons. His performance tailed off badly over the last three years and he can be viewed as a reclamation project for the Rangers. He went 6-15 with a 5.52 ERA in 174 1/3 innings for the Giants in 2017.

Anthony Swarzak    R  Mets

Mets signed RHP Anthony Swarzak to a two-year, $14 million contract. The Mets made the deal official today after Swarzak passed his physical. He turned in the best season of his career in 2017, registering a 2.33 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings while pitching for the White Sox and Brewers. The Mets will be the sixth major league team for the 32-year-old right-handed reliever. He will see action in a set-up role in front of closer candidates Jeurys Familia and A.J. Ramos.

Tom Koehler    R  Blue Jays

Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports the Dodgers will sign RHP Tom Koehler to a one year deal. The 31-year-old began the 2017 season in the Marlins' rotation but was sent to the minors after getting pounded in 12 starts. He went 1-5 with a 7.92 ERA in 55 2/3 innings. He was then traded to the Blue Jays and turned things around to the tune of a 2.65 ERA in 17 innings, mostly in relief. Despite that late-season success he was non-tendered by Toronto last week in an effort to avoid paying him the $6 million he was expected to earn via the arbitration process. The Dodgers will likely use him as a middle reliever in 2018.

Matt Moore    S  Giants

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle hears the Giants are on the verge of trading LHP Matt Moore and/or Hunter Pence to free up payroll space. He reports the deal is done pending a physical but there is no word on where they would be going nor what the Giants would get in return. Moore will make $9 million in 2018 and Pence is slated to draw $18.5 million in the coming season. Both players underperformed in 2017, so the club may not get much talent back in a trade with their main goal being a salary purge. The inference here is the Giants could be marshaling their resources to make a run for one of the top remaining free agents, possibly J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas or Yu Darvish.
