The Vegas Golden Knights might enter the 2017-18 campaign without naming a team captain. "We may be better off just having a leadership group than naming one guy captain," Vegas GM George McPhee said. "We really don't want to put a 'C' on a guy unless this is going to be the person that's going to lead us for a long time. We'd like to get to know these players a lot better than we know them right now." That makes some sense given that everyone on the team will still be settling in during training camp and in the early stages of the season. It's also worth noting that only Reilly Smith is signed to a one-way contract that extends beyond the 2019-20 campaign, setting the stage for the team to go through a period of major turnover in the coming years.

Vegas is near the top of the league in terms of ticket revenue, according to Golden Knights owner Bill Foley. More specifically they're "number five, six or seven." Among the team's Foley claims they're beating are the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. If that's true then it's a very encouraging sign for the expansion franchise, although the big test for them will be how well they hold up over time. To that end though, Foley noted that they've sold multi-year season tickets, which naturally helps with that longevity factor.

Vegas is reportedly looking to acquire a top-three pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Vegas holds three first-round picks and another three second-round picks, so they have the tools to trade up if the price is reasonable. We might also see Vegas trade more defensemen just before or during the draft as the Golden Knights have nine inked to one-way contracts, plus Shea Theodore, who will likely be on the opening game roster, and RFAs Griffin Reinhart and Nate Schmidt.

Vegas GM George McPhee expects to make some trades involving defensemen after the expansion draft. "We're going to have to move some defensemen because we're going to claim a bunch," McPhee said. The Golden Knights have to select nine defensemen, but they could exceed that total. Vegas has at least six trades ready to be announced with the possibility of more before and after the expansion draft. There's plenty of speculation that deals with Anaheim, Columbus, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the Islanders are already in place. There could also be a deal in the works with Minnesota and McPhee was talking with the Leafs on Tuesday.

Golden Knights GM George McPhee is pleased with the group of players the NHL's newest franchise will assemble in the expansion draft. "I think it's going to be a pretty good team," McPhee said. "We're happy that we've got a lot of defensemen, we've got really good goaltending, we've got a lot of centers and we've got scoring on the wing. We should have good speed." The roster will be revealed Wednesday night during the NHL Awards show. Vegas will also finally get to detail the trades that have been made and there could be at least six that have been finalized so far. McPhee said that some players who are taken in the expansion draft will be traded, so they won't be members of the team for very long.

Vegas GM George McPhee plans to finalize all trades regarding the expansion draft by the end of Monday. That doesn't mean we'll actually know what trades have been made today. Some information might trickle out, but the trades will still likely be announced when the expansion draft results are revealed Wednesday night.

While it seems unlikely that the Vegas Golden Knights would reach the cap ceiling in their first season, it sounds like GM George McPhee has the flexibility to do so. "We're going to do what we have to do to build a good team, and if we have to go to the cap, we will," McPhee said. That quote was in the context about a larger question about how the salary cap increase might impact Vegas and he didn't feel it would. The fact that the cap didn't go up by much plays into the Golden Knights' hand though as it puts more pressure on teams that have bad contracts to unload them. Given the Golden Knights immense cap flexibility at this time, McPhee is in a unique position to take on bad contracts in exchange for prospects or draft picks if the offers are favorable enough.

The Vegas Golden Knights haven't finalized any trades. Vegas can make trades with teams with regards to the expansion draft, but such deals won't be announced until Wednesday night. There have been some reports suggesting that Vegas will make trades with certain teams, like Columbus for example, so that teams can avoid losing specific unprotected players, but it sounds like none of that has been firmed up yet. "We don't have anything," Vegas GM George McPhee said. "We have lots of things lined up. But until we see everything, we don't have anything. We're going to make all of our final decisions late because we don't know what kind of calls we're going to get today. They may be different than the calls the same manager may have different things to talk about today, now that we're in the expansion window, than he did the last few days."

There's a chance the Vegas Golden Knights have already accumulated three first-round draft picks. They already own the sixth overall pick, but TSN's Pierre LeBrun spoke to an NHL general manager, who believes there's a chance the Golden Knights have already made side deals to acquire more draft picks. One of the teams that has reportedly shipped their first-rounder to Vegas is the Columbus Blue Jackets. We'll find out exactly who made side deals with Golden Knights GM George McPhee prior to next week's expansion draft. The arrival of the Golden Knights has definitely made things interesting for the other 30 teams in the NHL.

George McPhee is ready to make a deal with any NHL team. McPhee has been taking calls from other GMs who are looking to unload some hefty contracts and McPhee could do so depending on what the other team is willing to give up in addition namely draft picks. "We have a lot of teams offering us big contracts," McPhee said Saturday at the NHL Scouting Combine. "We’ll take a few of those, for the right price...There’s been a lot of discussion, and a lot of the guys (GMs) have been forthright about what they’d like to do and who they’d like to protect. We’re trying to find ways to accommodate each other. We’re far along on a couple that I imagine we’ll have something done soon,". Stay tuned as this will be an interesting month for the Golden Knights.
