Isaiah Thomas News

Thomas (hip) has progressed to playing four-on-four games at practice, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic Cleveland reports. There was a report in late November that Thomas was "ramping up" for three-on-three work, so the news that he participated in a four-on-four game Wednesday is on pace with that. That same report mentioned that the Cavaliers are aiming for a mid-December return for the point guard, which is drawing near. More word on his recovery and an updated timetable will likely be provided sooner than later, as he's clearly worked his way back into basketball form.

Isaiah Thomas (hip) got in some 4-on-4 work during Wednesday's shootaround. Thomas has been making solid progress in his rehab, and the next step in his recovery will be going through 5-on-5 drills. He's on track to get back to the court by January, and while he'll likely have plenty of restrictions early on, he could be in the early-round equation towards the second half of the season. He's a high upside stash in all formats.

Thomas (hip) is "ramping up" for three-on-three work, with the Cavaliers aiming for his return in mid-December, Brian Windhorst of ESPN reports. Thomas was seen taking contact at practice from a trainer last week, so the news that he's nearing three-on-three work isn't too surprising. However, it's certainly news that there's some expectation that Thomas will be ready to return around mid-December. At the moment, it's tough to tell exactly how his return will impact the team, as Derrick Rose (personal) is away from the organization and evaluating his future in basketball, opening up time for Dwyane Wade to spend some time at point guard. Once the smoke clears on that situation, it will be easier to evaluate what Thomas' return means in a fantasy context, especially for other members of the Cavaliers' roster.

Thomas (hip) was spotted taking contact from a trainer during the team's morning shootaround Wednesday, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports. The extent of Thomas' workout wasn't entirely clear, but the fact that he's taking contact in any fashion marks a positive step forward in the point guard's recovery from a torn labrum in his hip. Previous reports have indicated that Thomas is targeting early January for his Cavaliers debut, but it's conceivable that he could be back at some point in December if he continues to make further strides in his recovery. Thomas' eventual return won't resolve the Cavs' defensive woes, but he should make for a dynamic complementary option to LeBron James once he gets his conditioning in order. Expect more updates on Thomas' progress in the weeks to come.

Isaiah Thomas (hip) got in some light contact work during Wednesday's shootaround. Thomas continues to make steady progress in his recovery from the torn labrum in his right hip, and this is the first time we've seen of him go through any type of contact work. The next big step in his recovery will be incorporating hard cuts into his workouts, so we'll be watching for any updates there, but he certainly appears to be on track to be back in action by January at the latest.

Isaiah Thomas (hip) went through an intense workout on Sunday, doing full-court sprints, shooting 3s and running through some 5-on-0 drills. Thomas said this was the "hardest" he's run so far in his recovery, and that he "felt good for the most part." While the Cavs' haven't officially updated his potential return date, he's completed each stage of his recovery without any setbacks or pauses and is on track to return to the floor by January 1. The next step in Thomas' rehab will be incorporating cutting and change of direction work, so we'll be watching for any updates there.

Thomas (hip) took part in some 5-on-0 drills during Sunday's practice, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports. Thomas appears to be slowly ramping up his activity level, now being allowed to take part in some non-contact work and shooting drills. That being said, the Cavaliers haven't updated his timetable at all, so it appears he's still targeting a Jan. 1 return for the time being. Thomas is fully expected to start at point guard once cleared, though until he's going through full-contact work, a return shouldn't be considered forthcoming.

Isaiah Thomas (hip) said he is "getting closer to being back on the floor and being able to play." In a lengthy interview with USA Today, Thomas defends his decision not to have surgery and is optimistic about the near future. "Every week now, every week I'm getting better and better. I'm doing more and more," said Thomas. The initial targeted return date was early January, and it appears Thomas may be slightly ahead of schedule, with a return in late December now a seemingly a possibility. We should have plenty of updates over the next month.

The Cavaliers are targeting January 1 as a potential return date for Thomas (hip), who has not yet played this season, Marc Stein of ESPN reports. Publicly, the Cavaliers haven't said much about Thomas' continued recovery from a hip injury, but the All-Star has been warming up before recent games and does not appear to be physically limited. Per Stein, Thomas said that at this point it's a matter of "getting back in shape" considering he hasn't played in an NBA game in nearly six months. Once healthy, Thomas is expected to eventually move into the starting lineup at point guard, though the Cavaliers will likely ease him back into action.
