Lonzo Ball News

Lonzo Ball    G  Lakers

Lonzo Ball made 4-of-8 from the field for 11 points during a 113-102 loss to the Kings on Wednesday, adding seven rebounds, 11 assists, one steal and three 3-pointers in 37 minutes. He's getting killed on social media for his awful shooting percentages, but he's actually been decent on the road. In his eight road games, he has a sub-par 45.8 TS%, but that plummets to a historically bad 30.6 TS% when he's at Staples Center. He did also miss both of his free throws to drop him to 42.9 percent from the charity stripe on the season -- that's worse than Dwight Howard, Andre Drummond or any free throw percentage qualifier. The good news is he's taking a step in the right direction, but he has a very deep hole to climb out of to be a reliable fantasy asset.

Ball finished with just eight points (3-13 FG, 2-8 3Pt), 13 rebounds, four assists and one steal in 32 minutes during Tuesday's 103-94 victory over Chicago. Ball struggled from the field again, hitting just 3-of-13 shots. While most rookie point-guards have issues with their efficiency, his numbers have been almost catastrophic. He is currently at 30.8 percent from the floor, and 46.2 percent from the charity stripe. If you can overlook these glaring weaknesses, he has provided excellent rebounds, assists, and steals and there is no reason to think that this will change moving forward.

Lonzo Ball hit just 3-of-13 shots for eight points, 13 rebounds, four assists, one steal, two triples and one turnover on Tuesday vs. the Bulls. His efficiency is still horrendous, but Ball makes up for it other areas such as rebounding, assists and defensive stats. So how inefficient are we talking? According to ESPN, just 12 players since the advent of the 3-point line in 1979 have posted a true shooting percentage worse than Ball's .368 mark (with at least 500 minutes). Until Ball improves as a scorer, he'll continue to be a much better fantasy asset in leagues that don't punish his shooting woes.

Ball registered 11 points (5-13 FG, 1-4 3Pt), 16 rebounds, 11 assists and two blocks across 40 minutes in Sunday's 127-109 win over the Nuggets. Ball's second career triple-double, which came at an age of 20 years and 23 days, included a career-high rebound total and tied him with LeBron James for youngest player to achieve the feat twice. He also joined Magic Johnson as the only Lakers player to have multiple triple-doubles in his rookie season and represented his first double-digit scoring effort since Nov. 11. Ball's shooting continues to be an issue on most nights, but he's encouragingly posted a 40.0 percent success rate over his last two games, a figure that still leaves plenty of room for improvement but is markedly better than the 29.6 percent success rate he's managed in 10 November games overall.

Lonzo Ball posted the second triple-double of his NBA career on Sunday with 11 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists, two blocks and one 3-pointer in 40 minutes. The Lakers snapped a two-game losing streak tonight and Ball continues to be a fantasy dynamo, with the glaring exception of percentages (30.8% FGs and 46.2% FTs). In every other respect he's been awesome, averaging 6.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.6 steals, 1.1 threes and 0.9 blocks. His fantasy value hinges on each league's scoring settings -- if you can ignore percentages, the 20-year-old is already a stud.

Coach Luke Walton said he is not considering moving Lonzo Ball out of the starting lineup. "He's our starting point guard," Walton said after practice earlier this week. "So there's no discussion, no talks as of now of moving Lonzo to the bench. Nah. He's our starting point guard." Ball had been benched in the fourth quarters of the Lakers win on Monday and their loss on Wednesday. However, Ball closed out the game on Friday, despite continued struggles with his shooting. Ball's rebounding and assist numbers remain strong, but his poor percentages hurt his value. He currently ranks outside the top-150 in nine-category fantasy leagues.

Lonzo Ball scored just six points with six rebounds, six assists, a career-high five steals, one block and three turnovers vs. the Suns on Friday. Ball's best game of the season came against the Suns when he had 29 points against them on Oct. 20, but it's pretty much been downhill since. He finished 3-of-7 from the field and missed both of his free throws, and it's a concern that he managed just six points against the tiny backcourt combo of Tyler Ulis and Mike James. On the bright side, at least he closed this game after getting benched in the fourth quarter of his previous two games.

Coach Luke Walton said he wants Lonzo Ball to improve his shot selection. Ball has struggled mightily with his shot all season and has been benched in the fourth quarter in each of the Lakers last two games. Walton told reporters that some of Ball's 3-point attempts have been forced and not within the flow of the offense. "If he’s going to his left and they go under (a screen) and he’s in rhythm and wants to pull up and shoot that 3, then we’re good with that. That’s what we want," said Walton. Ball will look to snap out of his slump Friday night vs. the Suns.

Ball mustered just two points (1-9 FG, 0-6 3Pt), five rebounds, two assists and one steal across 21 minutes in Wednesday's 115-109 loss to the Sixers. The rookie was benched in the fourth quarter after generating his sixth sub-20 percent shooting night in eight November contests. Ball's struggles included his third game of the current month with no three-pointers, while his minutes total was a season low. Although head coach Luke Walton reiterated after the game that there are no plans to attempt to modify Ball's unorthodox jump shot, the numbers may eventually force the issue -- factoring in Wednesday's contest, Ball's field-goal percentage now stands at 30.3 on an average of 11.7 attempts per game.

Lonzo Ball got benched again on Wednesday during a loss to the 76ers, making 1-of-9 from the field for two points with five rebounds, two assists, one steal and two turnovers in 21 minutes. Uh oh. He didn't play in final 16:04 tonight, and didn't play in the final 14:47 on Monday. This benching has been compounded by Jordan Clarkson getting hot these days, which won't go on forever. Ball has just been a complete disaster as a scorer with his 36.4 TS% on his 19.1 usage rate on the season. How bad is that? Well, no scoring qualifier has finished a season with a usage rate of at least 19 and a TS% below 39. We all knew Ball wasn't going to be a plus scorer, but he's off to one of the worst starts in history from an efficiency standpoint. Hopefully you're punting FG% anyway, and at least Ball has nowhere to go but up.
