Mavericks News

Kyle Collinsworth    SG  Mavericks

Collinsworth, who signed a 10-day contract with the Mavericks on Jan. 13, played 10 minutes in Tuesday's 105-102 loss to the Nuggets and provided three points (1-1 FG, 1-2 FT) and two rebounds. The Mavericks didn't waste any time bringing Collinsworth back on to the roster after he was waived just three days earlier to make room for Jalen Jones, who inked a two-way contract with Dallas. Though his new 10-day deal doesn't give him much job security, Collinsworth performed adequately off the bench Tuesday when the absence of J.J. Barea (groin) opened up a spot in the backcourt rotation. Barea is hopeful to play in the Mavs' next game Saturday in Portland, so it wouldn't be surprising if Collinsworth failed to get off the bench in that contest.

J.J. Barea    PG  Mavericks

Barea (groin) said he's hopeful to play Saturday against the Trail Blazers, Earl K. Sneed of the Mavericks' official site reports. "It should be OK," Barea said Tuesday, regarding the health of his strained left groin. Barea was sidelined for Tuesday's 105-102 loss to the Nuggets, resulting in heavier workloads off the bench for Yogi Ferrell and Devin Harris, while rookie Kyle Collinsworth also entered the backcourt rotation. It doesn't sound like a long-term absence is on the table for Barea, who stands to benefit from the Mavericks' light schedule this week. If Barea is able to gradually increase his activity during workouts the next three days, his chances of rejoining the backcourt mix Saturday will increase.

J.J. Barea    G  Mavericks

J.J. Barea (groin) is hopeful that he'll be able to get back to the court for Saturday's game in Portland. Barea missed Tuesday's game due to the groin issue, but said he "should be okay," and he'll have had a full week off going into Saturday's game so maybe he'll be able to get back out there. If Barea is able to return to the court, Devin Harris' minutes will take a hit.

Dennis Smith    PG  Mavericks

Smith scored 25 points (11-18 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT) while adding five assists, two rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes during Tuesday's 105-102 loss to the Nuggets. The rookie led a furious fourth-quarter comeback for the Mavs that fell just short. Smith has now scored 20 or more points in three of his last four games, averaging 20.8 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 boards, 1.3 three-pointers and 1.0 steals over that stretch, and he appears to be fully recovered from December's hip issues.

Devin Harris    G  Mavericks

Devin Harris came off the bench for 16 points, one assist and four 3-pointers on 5-of-11 shooting Tuesday, in just 18 minutes of action. J.J. Barea (groin) sat this one out, moving Yogi Ferrell to the bench and freeing up some room for Harris to work. This was Harris' best game in January, but he's only getting 18 minutes a night, which isn't enough for him to be owned in fantasy.

Yogi Ferrell    G  Mavericks

Yogi Ferrell moved to the bench with J.J. Barea out (groin) on Tuesday and hit 5-of-10 shots and a 3-pointer for 13 points, two rebounds, seven assists and a steal in 35 minutes off the bench. The Mavs started Maxi Kleber, who did nothing, and Ferrell was instrumental in helping the Mavs win the fourth quarter 33-19 and giving his team a chance to win the game. Ferrell's generally more fun to use when he's starting, but has scored in double figures in four straight games. If you picked him up and used him this week, we're at the halfway mark, with Dallas finishing their week on Saturday against the Blazers.

Dennis Smith Jr.    G  Mavericks

Dennis Smith Jr. hit 11-of-18 shots and 3-of-3 free throws for 25 points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal in 31 minutes of Tuesday's 105-102 loss to the Nuggets. Smith helped lead a fourth-quarter comeback when Dallas outscored Denver 33-19, but came up just short. DSJ had a big three-point play near the end that cut the lead to one when he hit the free throw, but he also had a costly late turnover, as well. DSJ is playing very well right now, averaging 18.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.6 blocks and 1.2 3-pointers on 43 percent shooting over his last five, and has hit 16-of-17 free throws in his last four. He's still learning how to play, but has scored at least 20 points in three of his last four games. Make sure he's in your lineup if Dallas is playing.

Dirk Nowitzki    F/C  Mavericks

Dirk Nowitzki played just 23 minutes and hit 3-of-5 shots for six points, four rebounds and a steal in Tuesday's 105-102 loss to the Nuggets. Nikola Jokic destroyed the center-less Macs tonight and Dallas made their big comeback in the fourth quarter with Dirk on the bench. Dirk has been a pleasant surprise this season, but has scored six or fewer points in three of his last five games. While it's possible he's running out of gas, the fact that he's playing a lot of center for Dallas may also be taking its toll. He'll try to bounce back against Jusuf Nurkic and the Blazers on Saturday, which should be interesting after Nurkic was benched for a big part of Tuesdays' Blazers' game.

Yogi Ferrell    PG  Mavericks

Ferrell will shift back to a bench role for Tuesday's matchup with the Nuggets, Harrison Wind of BSN Denver reports. The Mavericks are opting to go big against the Nuggets, with Maxi Kleber moving into the starting lineup and Ferrell coming off the bench. That will also allow Ferrell to serve as the Mavericks backup point guard and provide some ball-handling help in the second unit with J.J. Barea (groin) still sidelined. The demotion to the bench could potentially mean less minutes overall for Ferrell.

Maxi Kleber    F  Mavericks

Maxi Kleber will start vs. the Mavericks on Tuesday, sending Yogi Ferrell back to the bench. Kleber has been trending down for weeks and there's no indication that this is anything more than a matchup-based decision. Leave Kleber on the wire for now.
