Dennis Smith Jr.    G  Mavericks

In a survey of incoming rookies, Dennis Smith Jr. was selected as the favorite to win the 2017-18 Rookie of the Year award. Thirty-nine rookies took part in the survey and 25.7 percent of them tabbed Smith as the ROY front-runner. Lonzo Ball finished in second-place, with 20 percent of the vote. After slipping to ninth in the 2017 draft, Smith was dominant at the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.2 steals. Assuming he plays well in the preseason, Smith will be flying up draft boards in October.

Nerlens Noel    F/C  Mavericks

Nerlens Noel has hired Rich Paul of Klutch Sports as his new agent. It is uncommon for a restricted free agent to fire and hire a new agency to represent him this late in the process. However, it is clear that Noel was unhappy his previous agent, Happy Walters. Noel and the Mavs are locked into a stalemate. It believed that the Noel is looking for a contract near or at the max, while Dallas is not willing to offer that type of salary. Noel still has the option of signing the $4.2 million qualifying offer and then becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2018.

Wesley Matthews    G/F  Mavericks

Wesley Matthews said he expects to showcase "a more all-around skillset" to lead the Mavs back to the playoffs. "I want to be the most complete basketball player that I can be, and with the shooting slump that I had there were still ways that I had to be effective on the court," he said. "You know, energy, leadership and defense, that’s always going to be a part of it. But being able to get other guys shots and get other guys open, I take pride in that as well." Matthews averaged 12.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.4 treys last season, but shot an abysmal 38.8 percent from the field. He's reportedly in great shape and has been incorporating yoga into his offseason program, but Matthews is only worth a look late in drafts because he hasn't looked the same since his Achilles injury back in 2015.

Nerlens Noel    F/C  Mavericks

Nerlens Noel has fired his agent and will soon sign with Dan Fegan. Noel hasn't been thrilled with what the Mavericks have offered him and is hoping that Fegan will pry a max contract offer out of Mark Cuban. The risk is huge with Noel struggling with knee trouble since he entered the league, and it doesn't help his case that most NBA teams are out of cap space. While a max deal seems unlikely, maybe Fegan will help speed up the process and land Noel a deal prior to training camp in September. Assuming he re-signs in Dallas, Noel will be a high-risk, high-reward option in the middle rounds.

Jeff Withey agreed to a one-year deal with the Mavs. The Mavs still haven't brought back Nerlens Noel yet, but Withey should still have a tough time making the Mavs roster. Withey did get one start last season and played in 51 games, averaging 2.9 points per effort.

Dennis Smith Jr.    G  Mavericks

Coach Rick Carlisle is expected to ask for much more production to come from this floor generals next season. "Well, having a dynamic point guard that can get places, that can attack space, create help and kick to guys like Dirk, like Wes [Matthews] and like [Harrison] Barnes, guys that can shoot the ball, and be able to hit guys like Nerlens (Noel) on rolls can really be a game-changer," Carlisle said. The Dennis Smith Jr. hype train just won't stop as the Mavs look to increase their last-ranked offense in scoring, which was also due to their slow pace. DSJ is going to cost a pretty penny in drafts, but he could be worth it.
