Mavericks News

J.J. Barea    G  Mavericks

J.J. Barea (oblique) will not play against the Nuggets on Saturday. He's struggled with a litany of mid-body injuries in his career, so don't be surprised to see Barea miss multiple games. With him out, it'll be Yogi Ferrell getting some extra run. Dennis Smith Jr. gets more opportunity to keep his strong stretch going.

Harrison Barnes    SF  Mavericks

Barnes scored 21 points (6-15 FG, 2-4 3PT, 7-7 FT) to go with seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 34 minutes during Friday's 107-93 loss to Portland. Leading the way for Dallas as he has done for most of the season, Barnes has averaged 17.5 points and 7.4 rebounds in his last nine games. During this span, the forward has shot the ball well, sinking 45.3 percent of his 14.4 shots per game. Still, Barnes is the leading option (18.4 points) in a struggling Mavericks' offense that averages 102.2 points per game.

Dennis Smith    PG  Mavericks

Smith scored 18 points (7-14 FG, 4-7 3PT) to go with four rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 33 minutes during Friday's 107-93 loss to Portland. After scoring 20-plus points in three straight games, Smith has slightly leveled off in his next three games. Still, the guard is averaging 19.1 points in his last six games. In addition, he has dished out 5.5 assists during this span. Thus far, the rookie guard has impressed with an average of 14.8 points through 41 games. In fact, Smith has become a more consistent scorer as of late, scoring in double-digits in 13 straight games. He will look to continue his current scoring run against Denver on Saturday.

Dennis Smith Jr.    G  Mavericks

Dennis Smith Jr. scored 18 points vs. the Blazers on Friday in 33 minutes. After averaging 26.8 minutes in December, DSJ has now played 30+ minutes in eight straight games. He finished 7-of-14 from the field without any free throws, adding seven assists, four rebounds, two steals and four triples. After a rocky start to the season, DSJ looks like he could be a fantasy stud down the stretch.

Harrison Barnes    F  Mavericks

Harrison Barnes scored 21 points vs. the Blazers on Friday with seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block and two triples. He played 34 minutes, hitting 6-of-15 shots and all seven of his free throws. He's been all over the place lately, but he hasn't played less than 30 minutes in a game since Dec. 2 and is one of a few players that fantasy owners can rely on in Dallas. He gets a matchup with the Nuggets on Sunday.

Jan 27 - 1:16 AM

Dirk Nowitzki    F/C  Mavericks

Coach Rick Carlisle said Dirk Nowitzki (illness) is feeling better and will play Friday vs. Portland. Dirk played only 15 minutes Wednesday vs. Houston due to a stomach bug. Surprisingly, Dirk has yet to miss a game this season, appearing in all 48 games the Mavs have played.

Jan 26 - 12:11 PM

Nerlens Noel    C  Mavericks

Coach Rick Carlisle said Noel (thumb) will likely return after the first week of February, Tim MacMahon of reports. Noel was originally hoping to return near the start of February, but it appears the big man is progressing slower than expected in his rehab. Carlisle didn't specify how much longer he thought Noel would be sidelined, though it sounds like he won't be cleared to return until after the trade deadline, which is Feb. 8. The 23-year-old fell out of favor prior to suffering the injury, so he may be limited to a minor role even when he's healthy.

Fantasy Alarm

Jan 25 - 12:30 AM

Yogi Ferrell    PG  Mavericks

Ferrell led the Mavericks bench with 19 points (6-9 FG, 4-5 3PT), four rebounds and four assists in a 104-97 loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. Ferrell has quietly been a great player off of Dallas' bench all season, as he's averaging 10.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. The 32 minutes played here is also an encouraging sign, as Ferrell has to battle J.J. Barea for guard minutes off the bench. He's also behind Dennis Smith Jr. and Wesley Matthews on the totem pole, as he could become a huge fantasy asset if one of those players goes down.

Fantasy Alarm

Jan 24 - 10:50 PM

Wesley Matthews    G/F  Mavericks

Wesley Matthews scored a season-high 29 points with four rebounds, five assists, two steals, one block and seven 3-pointers in 38 minutes against the Rockets during a 104-97 loss on Wednesday. He's on one of his best runs as a Mav with his 16.0 points per game in his previous January outings, adding averages of 3.6 boards, 2.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.9 treys. Matthews is seeing some huge minutes and he'll get a revenge game against the Blazers on Friday -- he scored 23 against them on Saturday, as well. Matthews is trending up and is basically a must-start fantasy option.

Jan 24 - 10:41 PM

Dirk Nowitzki    F/C  Mavericks

Dirk Nowitzki was battling an illness on Wednesday, finishing with seven points, two rebounds, one assist and two 3-pointers in 15 minutes against the Rockets. Coach Rick Carlisle said he was sick a couple days ago, so apparently there's a bug going around with the Mavs. Nowitzki's minutes were down in this game, so this news explains that. He should be OK for Friday against the Blazers.
