Mavericks News

Wesley Matthews    G/F  Mavericks

Wesley Matthews matched his season-high with seven triples vs. the Clippers on Monday, finishing with 23 points in 34 minutes. This was his third game of the season with seven triples, and he also racked up five assists, two rebounds, two blocks and one steal on 7-of-16 shooting. Matthews had more on his plate tonight with Harrison Barnes (ankle) out, and it was nice to see him snap out of a funk after scoring in single digits in two out of his previous four games. He's a name to watch at the deadline, but his contract won't be easy to move.

Feb 06 - 1:35 AM

Dwight Powell    F/C  Mavericks

Dwight Powell made his third straight start on Monday vs. the Clippers, scoring eight points with 10 rebounds, four assists and a block in 28 minutes. We now have a decent sample size to work with and Powell continues to trend up. He's averaging 10.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.6 steals through three starts, making him a decent low-end big to pick up. It's going to be interesting to see what the Mavs do with Nerlens Noel (thumb) at the deadline, but Powell's role is safe for now.

Feb 06 - 1:30 AM

Yogi Ferrell    G  Mavericks

Yogi Ferrell drew the start on Monday vs. the Clippers, scoring nine points with three rebounds, one assist and one triple in 32 minutes. He started in place of Harrison Barnes (ankle), but obviously wasn't very productive. Ferrell had three 3-pointers in each of his two previous games and has been holding onto low-end value for a while, and he could benefit if the Mavs move a veteran or two at the deadline such as Wesley Matthews.

Feb 06 - 1:23 AM

Dennis Smith Jr.    G  Mavericks

Dennis Smith Jr. turned the ball over a career-high nine times in a 104-101 loss to the Clippers on Monday, finishing with 12 points, five assists, three rebounds and two triples. He also fouled out in the final minute and hit just 5-of-17 from the field with zero free throw attempts. His fantasy owners were expecting more with Dallas' top offensive weapon in Harrison Barnes (ankle) sitting out, but DSJ struggled mightily and the Mavs collapsed down the stretch, allowing the Clippers to score the final 13 points of the game. Until he improves his efficiency, he will be a much better fantasy asset in points formats as opposed to category leagues.

Feb 06 - 1:05 AM

Jalen Jones    SG  Mavericks

Jones has been recalled from the G-League for Monday's game against the Clippers, Earl Sneed of reports. The Mavs claimed Jones off waivers nearly a month ago, but he's appeared in only one contest, spending most of his time with the Texas Legends of the G-League. Jones likely won't have much of a role Monday, but he could pick up a few residual minutes in the absence of Harrison Barnes.

Harrison Barnes    SF  Mavericks

Barnes (ankle) will not play in Monday's game against the Clippers, Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News reports. Barnes reportedly came down awkwardly on his ankle in Saturday's win over the Kings, but he still managed to play 34 minutes. However, the injury seems to be hindering him enough to hold him out Barnes out for at least one contest, with his chance of returning Thursday at Golden State still up in the air. This is Barnes' first absence of the regular season, and it will likely result in Wesley Matthews playing more small forward than usual and the Mavericks using more size in the frontcourt, which could result in more minutes for Maxi Kleber at power forward.

Harrison Barnes    F  Mavericks

Harrison Barnes (left ankle) will not play Monday vs. the Clippers. Barnes did not go through shootaround and it's unclear if he'll be available to play on Thursday in Golden State, so this is more than just a minor ankle issue. With him out tonight, there will be more minutes for guys like Maxi Kieber, Dwight Powell and Josh McRoberts and more shots for Dennis Smith Jr., J.J. Barea, Devin Harris and Dirk Nowitzki.

Feb 05 - 2:09 PM

Dorian Finney-Smith    SF  Mavericks

Finney-Smith (knee) remains without a firm return timetable, Earl Sneed of reports. Finney-Smith has been out for nearly three months with tendinitis in his left knee, and the Mavs haven't offered much in terms of a timetable, though the team did say back in January that Finney-Smith could return in February "at the earliest." The wing will remain out for Monday's game against the Clippers, and at this point it seems rather unlikely that Finney-Smith will be available before the All-Star break.

Nerlens Noel    C  Mavericks

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said Sunday that Noel (thumb) has progressed to five-on-zero and non-contact drills, Earl K. Sneed of the Mavericks' official site reports. Carlisle is hopeful that Noel will be available shortly after the All-Star break. After re-signing with the Mavericks on a one-year deal in August, Noel has done little to bolster his value on the open market in his first full season in Dallas. Noel has occupied only a fringe spot in the rotation for the Mavericks, averaging 4.0 points and 4.1 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game over 18 appearances before requiring thumb surgery in early December. While it appears he's on the mend and trending toward a return within a few weeks, Noel could find himself behind Dwight Powell, Salah Mejri and Dirk Nowitzki in the pecking order at center once he's healthy again.

Nerlens Noel    F/C  Mavericks

Nerlens Noel (left thumb surgery) has progressed to 5-on-0 and non-contact drills, and he could be cleared to play after the All-Star break. Interestingly, coach Rick Carlisle said he's "dying to get [Noel] back ... definitely looking forward to having him available." Noel fell out of the rotation when healthy but he could get renewed playing time after the break, because the Mavs reportedly want to see how he and Dennis Smith Jr. look together. If you're stashing him, though, it's likely in the hopes of a trade.
